T.A.P.S. Tactical Application of Practical Shooting: Recognize the void in your tactical training Review

Apparently I'm the only guy writing a review on this page that doesn't personally know the Author, I wish I did! He is a person with an impressive resume in tactical shooting. This is a great book but you need to understand the scope before you order it. This is not a "how to shoot" book. There are a couple of decent tidbits in here about how to shoot but, this book assumes that you already understand the fundamentals of not only basic shooting, but of practical shooting. For example, there are no pictures or description of all the shooting positions. This is a "how to teach other people to shoot" book. In that respect it is a great resource. The book is basically in two parts. First there are a lot of great insights on training people to shoot. I love the author's style of commentary and how it is arranged as "tidbits" of knowledge instead of being forced into a traditional format. I found myself pleasantly surprised that I had come to some of the same conclusions as the author. It made me feel vindicated, and where I didn't It gave me reason to rethink some of my own views on practical shooting. After this there is a collection of "courses of fire" that will aid in running a competition or a training program. If you need a book on the basics of shooting, I would recommend Kyle Lamb's "Green Eyes Black Rifles." But, if you run a training program, shooting competition, or have hit a wall in the development of your own skills, you should have this book.

T.A.P.S. Tactical Application of Practical Shooting: Recognize the void in your tactical training Overview

Recognize the void in your tactical training Train like you fight Maintain safety at all times Choose targets that force accountability Develop a series of standards Patrick McNamara spent twenty-two years in the United States Army in a myriad of special operations units. When he worked in the premier special missions unit, he became an impeccable marksman, shooting with accurate, lethal results and tactical effectiveness. McNamara has trained tactical applications of shooting to people of all levels of marksmanship, from varsity level soldiers, U.S. Secret Service agents and police officers who work the streets to civilians with little to no time behind the trigger. His military experience quickly taught him that there is more to tactical marksmanship than merely squeezing the trigger. Utilizing his years of experience, McNamara developed a training methodology that is safe, effective and combat relevant and encourages a continuous thought process. This methodology teaches how to maintain safety at all times and choose targets that force accountability, as well as provides courses covering several categories, including individual, collective, on line and standards. TAPS: Tactical Application of Practical Shooting: Recognize the void in your tactical training will increase the confidence and efficiency in your shooting by providing training tips and courses of fire to help you significantly improve your marksmanship. Utilize his tips and techniques and reap the benefits as you shoot.

Bad to the bone, Bah-goezsh! - Heavy Carlitos - Las Vegas, NV
Mac gave the people exactly what they were looking for: a no-nonsense publication on the ground truth of the principals of accurate and effective shooting. It is obvious that this book is a result of popular demand from the thousands of students Mac has instructed over the years; walking away from one of his training sessions, students clearly pined the days away wanting for a better account of the instruction they received in his course; something beyond just the notes they may have scribbled down during the course. This book reads the way Mac talks. Packed with motivational one-liners and myriads of little jewels of knowledge Mac has developed over years of some of the most intense combat rifle and pistol training a body can endure.
Mac's philosophy on dealing with the GWOT is spot on, and I would highly recommend to take note of his sobering insight on world politics and the modern day terrorist threat. If you are looking to better your shooting skills, or thinking about learning from the ground up, this should be your first choice in supplemental text for your program. Get him to sign it if ever you get the opportunity; this guys is easily one of the up-and-coming world greats in effective fire arms instruction.
Get some, Mac!

Striking Thoughts: Bruce Lee's Wisdom for Daily Living (Bruce Lee Library) Review

I purchased this book to supplement my MA library in the hope that whenever I'm stuck in a mental rut, bored or lacking motivation, Bruce Lee's words would help to illuminate the (possible) cause of the impasse and show me the way back to my own center.

This book covers a number of different areas of life and awareness and if you were to breeze through it in a store, you may be tempted to blow it off as a collection of 'fortune cookie' answers to questions you haven't bothered to ask yourself. I felt this way when I skimmed through it in a local store. Still mildly interested, I thought about what I had read and returned to Amazon to read the available excerpts and then ordered this book. In the week that passed, I had unearthed some issues that were inhibiting my training both in and out of the dojo and was at a loss for a complete solution. Thanks to Bruce Lee's insights, I saw these knots from a different perspective -sometimes slightly different, sometimes in glaring contrast to what I had wrongly assumed is more or less true at all times -the latter being an indicator of a stale mind and spirit.

Budo (whatever form or style) is a means to train the body to respond efficiently and economically. What is often forgotten is that in the beginning (of training), we pay a great deal of attention to the manner in which our mind, thoughts, feelings and body respond -singularly and/or as a whole. As skill improves, this awareness and interest wanes in favor of attention to being as good as or better than our peers -as a result, the wholeness experienced in the early days of training takes a backseat and due to neglect, creates that nagging sense that 'something ain't right'. That 'something' is malnutrition and poor diet -a condition of the mind and spirit as well as the body.

In the 30 minute bus ride to my dojo, reading Bruce Lee's view on Pre-conditioning of the individual by society -at present and throughout history -along with a couple of statements on attention and awareness -filled in the gaps and corrected errors in my own thought processes. Once in the dojo (and during quiet time before training), I decided to apply what I had read. The brain fog cleared quickly and training became a 'whole' experience again. This alone is worth more than the cost of the book.

While the entries are brief, the effect is like eating a power bar - just enough when you need it. The contents are arranged according to areas addressed and the viewpoints are short and to the point.

To make a short story long ("too late", I know), this is a good book to have around -especially when you need a 'thought for the day' and a great supplement toward a well rounded MA library in order to continue as a whole person on the complex path of budo.

As I've stated in some of my other reviews, it was about 24 years between fishing trips for me and getting started again, I wanted to get my knots down again so I was not immediately giving all of my tackle to the lake and fish as free gifts. It's a great go anywhere aid that you can't beat for the price.

A Terrible Splendor: Three Extraordinary Men, a World Poised for War, and the Greatest Tennis Match Ever Played Review

I rarely write reviews for products, but I'm making an exception for this book. I've never read a book that so perfectly blended history and sport. The book is, in some ways, five separate stories woven together: A narrative account of the legendary Budge/Von Cramm match at the 1937 Davis Cup; biographies of Gottfried von Cramm, Don Budge, and Bill Tilden (particularly von Cramm); and a historical account of interwar Germany, with a particular focus on the treatment of homosexuals. Von Cramm's homosexuality was an open secret at the time of the match, but the Nazis were willing to overlook his sexual preferences as long as he kept winning.

The historical background of the match is daunting, but Fisher does an exceptional job weaving it into the various storylines regarding the players involved in the legendary match which lies at the narrative center of this book. This book deserved honest-to-goodness consideration for a Pulitzer. Even absent such recognition, this book should be a must-read both for tennis fans and for people interested in the history of Weimar and pre-WWII Nazi Germany.

A Terrible Splendor: Three Extraordinary Men, a World Poised for War, and the Greatest Tennis Match Ever Played Overview

Before Federer versus Nadal, before Borg versus McEnroe, the greatest tennis match ever played pitted the dominant Don Budge against the seductively handsome Baron Gottfried von Cramm. This deciding 1937 Davis Cup match, played on the hallowed grounds of Wimbledon, was a battle of titans: the world's number one tennis player against the number two; America against Germany; democracy against fascism. For five superhuman sets, the duo’s brilliant shotmaking kept the Centre Court crowd–and the world–spellbound.

But the match’s significance extended well beyond the immaculate grass courts of Wimbledon. Against the backdrop of the Great Depression and the brink of World War II, one man played for the pride of his country while the other played for his life. Budge, the humble hard-working American who would soon become the first man to win all four Grand Slam titles in the same year, vied to keep the Davis Cup out of the hands of the Nazi regime. On the other side of the net, the immensely popular and elegant von Cramm fought Budge point for point knowing that a loss might precipitate his descent into the living hell being constructed behind barbed wire back home.

Born into an aristocratic family, von Cramm was admired for his devastating good looks as well as his unparalleled sportsmanship. But he harbored a dark secret, one that put him under increasing Gestapo surveillance. And his situation was made even more perilous by his refusal to join the Nazi Party or defend Hitler. Desperately relying on his athletic achievements and the global spotlight to keep him out of the Gestapo’s clutches, his strategy was to keep traveling and keep winning. A Davis Cup victory would make him the toast of Germany. A loss might be catastrophic.

Watching the mesmerizingly intense match from the stands was von Cramm’s mentor and all-time tennis superstar Bill Tilden–a consummate showman whose double life would run in ironic counterpoint to that of his German pupil.

Set at a time when sports and politics were inextricably linked, A Terrible Splendor gives readers a courtside seat on that fateful day, moving gracefully between the tennis match for the ages and the dramatic events leading Germany, Britain, and America into global war. A book like no other in its weaving of social significance and athletic spectacle, this soul-stirring account is ultimately a tribute to the strength of the human spirit.

My 90-year-old father liked this! - Daiva Kianersi - Los Angeles, CA
I bought this as gift for my dad. He fled Lithuania as a young man, only to be conscripted by the German Army during WWII. He was in Dresden during the bombing of '45. Although this book is about the earlier time of WWI, it was interesting to him as a survivor of war and occupation. He took up tennis at the age of 58, and only stopped playing around age 82! He really enjoyed the book!

A winner - chiplatt - Chicago
This book will appeal to tennis fans, but Fisher deserves an ever broader readership given the depth of his discussion of Germany in the 1920s and 1930s. Fisher's literary method is to describe the lives and key matches of the top German and American tennis players of the era, and show how they are affected by the tensions that exist in the political and social climate of that period of time. It truly is Fisher's off-the-court writing that warrants the five star review for this book.

Great match; good read - Fred Doevils - Gorinchem, The Netherlands
A great read about `the greatest tennis match ever'. People in their forties may think its Wimbledon 1980 Borg-McEnroe, the youth may think it's Wimbledon 2008 Federer-Nadal. Ladies may think it's one of the matches Evert and Navratilova played or even 1926 Cannes Lenglen-Woody But after reading this book, you will now it's Budge-von Cramm Davis Cup 1937. Very well documented. Well written.
Sadly there is a big flaw; too big a part is about Big Bill Tilden. Just read Fank Deford.

What Fish Don't Want You to Know: An Insider's Guide to Freshwater Fishing Review

Despite having a cabin near a nice lake, I hadn't been fishing for many... many... years. When I decided to have a go at it again I set about to find a good book that would give me the basics. What I found was Frank Baron's book which provided not only a good bit of information - but a welcome dose of the philosophy of fishing and... well... of life.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is even remotely interested in the topic. Since reading Frank's book I have set out to find others of equal quality, but I haven't found any yet.

"Did you learn anything useful?" you ask.

My first day out I hit the lake early. Following some of the guidance from the book, I moved to the downwind side where I found an area near some structure. I laid my line (rigged per one of Frank's suggestions) where the shade from the trees met the sun on the water (also per Frank's advice).

An hour later I had a nice rainbow in hand.

Since my only goal for the day was to catch dinner, I called it quits after that first fish. (See the chapter in the book on 'fishing ethics'.)

Thank's for a great book!

Great book in print; Kindle edition, not so much - Rob T. - NJ
I've long thought that Hiking Grand Canyon is one of the best books about backpacking in the park. The PRINT edition is, at any rate. This review is of the Kindle version. This version preserves all of the text, but leaves out the maps that are critical to understanding the text. This is NOT apparent from the sample version of the Kindle edition, which includes the page with the map key, and includes several pictures (in grayscale, but discernible). I've brought my kindle along on some trips because it's lighter than a book, and I'd hoped that this version of the book would be worth having along. It is, but it's not what it really should be.

HUH? - Judith A. Murphy -
My boyfriend and I visited the Grand Canyon two summers ago.
Strangely - I was expecting loads of information on hiking the Grand Canyon. I thought the hotel loby would be chaulk full of information.....it was not.

We sat in the lobby and got most of our useful information from some bus driver who told us which path is easiest and warned us to take toilet paper with us. That was something we had not thought of.

Next morning we waved off most of the rangers who tried to scare us away...and we commenced hiking down the Grand Canyon. We made it almost to the CO river when we decided that we had just about enough strength to make it back to the top. So I thought it would be a good idea to get a book that would tell us how to get down and get back up - without dying.

Unfortunately THIS BOOK is not about a tourist hiking the Grand Canyon. It is about a professional hiker camping out in the Grand Canyon and spending a lifetime taking routes from point A to point B - not necessarity leading up or down but many time Across.

TMI !!! Too many maps, too many trails, too many tips on pitching a tent and seeing snakes. I just wanted to go there book a room at the bottom and climb up the next morning.

If you want to spend the rest of your life in the Canyon this book will be a great guide.
If you want to tour the Grand Canyon by foot - find another book and let me know if it is helpful.

I still would like to make the journey.

Is This a Great Game, or What?: From A-Rod's Heart to Zim's Head---My 25 Years in Baseball Review

There's no doubt baseball's popularity has diminished in recent years. The pace of the game is too slow, some argue; or there's just not enough run production to suit the fancy of others. Still others decry the sullen nature of the game's best players - high paid prima donnas who seem more concerned with their next endorsement deal than trying to win a game. Football seems to be our National Pastime now; the demographics support that notion. The Super Bowl hoopla is outrageous, making the World Series seem like a beer league game by comparison.

That may be true; however, as the author of this marvelous book, Tim Kurkjian contends, there's really no business like show business; and in this case, the show is big league baseball, in all its historic glory. Kurkjian's engaging prose takes us through his twenty-five year career of covering the game as a sportswriter and analyst. He looks like the nerdy neighbor who doesn't possess much hand-eye coordination, but he does possess a storytelling skill that is thoroughly entertaining and informative. I couldn't put it down.

For a true fan of the game, this is about as good as it gets. His anecdotes are a steady stream of fascinating insight about the game that requires so much skill and so much courage. Who wants to dig in against a Randy Johnson, with the very real prospect of a 99 mile per hour fastball bouncing off your skull? Or who wants to stand just ninety feet away from home plate, patrolling third base when the likes of Albert Pujols is taking his whacks?

Luckily, there are real big leaguers who can handle that stuff, and the fans are fortunate to watch their exploits, year in and year out. We're also fortunate Tim Kurkjian has a passion for the game and a wonderful knack for storytelling. It's a home run; for sure.

Is This a Great Game, or What?: From A-Rod's Heart to Zim's Head---My 25 Years in Baseball Overview

ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian has spent more than twenty-five years covering almost three thousand major league baseball games and interviewing about that many players, coaches, managers, and executives.

In Is This a Great Game, or What?, Kurkjian combines his years of experience, uncanny knowledge, and deep love of the game, to create a book filled with some of the most fascinating insight into Major League Baseball this side of Jim Bouton’s bestseller, Ball Four. Whether he’s explaining what goes through a ballplayer’s mind when he faces a fastball in the chapter “My Face Was Crushed by a Bowling Ball Going 90 MPH,” detailing bizarre rituals and superstitions performed by baseball’s greatest players, or taking us into the locker room to see what transpires in the clubhouse of a major league team, Kurkjian’s tales are at times hilarious, other times horrifying, yet always entertaining.
Kurkjian has spoken to some of the greatest ballplayers ever over the years, and they have revealed details about themselves and the game they love with a candor that readers won’t find anywhere else. Filled with anecdotes and fascinating insights, this is an essential book for baseball fans or anyone curious about America’s pastime.

Great Baseball Book! - Patrick J. McAdam -
There were so many parts of this book that I found insightful, interesting, and fun. It was one of those books that you're happy while reading and sad to see end. I've watched Tim over the year's on Baseball Tonight and the morning radio show and alsways found him interesting. I never realized how much of a baseball junkie he was though. For other baseball fanatics like me, I highly recommend this book!

Good stories written sloppily - Andrew Heiz -
Baseball is a great game with a history to match. Some of the stories are legend and some only known to true fans. What Kurkjian does well is tell the stories. What is done poorly is the editing. I found myself re-reading passages that made no sense. For example in the chapter about Baseball Tonight there is a description about a heated argument about knockdown pitches. "Brian Kenny told Dibble, 'Now make sure you say on TV what you said today in the meeting.' 'Don't worry' Dibble said. 'I will.' 'No, you won't,' Kenny said." (pg. 205). What is it? Say it or don't. This is typical of a fair amount of the book. Including the editing problems there are many factual errors. For instance he writes if Bill Buckner had not made the error and thrown out Mookie Wilson in game six of the 1986 World Series the game would have gone into extra innings (pg. 221 No. 8). The game was already in the 10th inning. Makes me wonder what other errors there are. If Kurkjian had been a baseball player writing his memoirs I'd be more forgiving. However he is a credentialed journalist, his job is to make write accurate , well written accounts of events.
For pure enjoyment of telling baseball stories, where accuracy may not be needed or wanted, you'll enjoy this book. Worth going to the library to check out.

Golf: The Best Short Game Instruction Book Ever! (Golf Magazine) Review

My wife bought this book for me for Valentine's Day . . . . while we were in the bookstore and I handed it to her saying 'buy this for me for Valentine's Day'

It's full of great tips, suggestions, pictures, easy to understand suggestions.

The BEST part of this book is that I finally know what I need to do when I'm in certain short game situations. What club do I use/where does the ball go/what kind of swing do I need when:

I'm 30 yards out in the rough? Bunker with a high wall? Just off the green on hardpan? 20 yards out on the fairway with a close cut pin? A far away cut pin?

This book answers them all. I even made up a cheat sheet and will be bringing it with me the next time I get out so I know what to do from just about any situation 60 yards and in.

The book has alot of great pictures and information and various aspects of the golf short game shots so improvement is easy if you practice what you see !!

Decent short game book for beginners - W. Corrigan - Boston, MA
The title of this book is definitely wrong. It is not in the top 5 or 10 best short game books (look for Dev Pelz' Short Game Bible or Phil Mickelson's book if you want the best. It's more geared for a beginner golfer and can be useful for someone who is new to the game. The DVD is pretty useless too, with 10 small 2-3 minute snipets of lessons.

Great Golf instruction book - T. K. Sysak - greenbush mi usa
This is a great golf instruction book. After I read a couple of chapters I went to the practice range and worked on the drills. The drills/instructions have improved my 75 and 50 yd shot by 150%.
The book was worth 10 time the I paid!!!!!

Check Out Cardboard Gods: An All-American Tale Told Through Baseball Cards for $15.27

Cardboard Gods: An All-American Tale Told Through Baseball Cards Review

Baseball cards have been around forever - at least since the latter part of the 19th century - giving fans from all walks of life a tangible link to the players on display; from the frequently stiff and absurdly posed phony "action shots" on the front, to a statistical summary of the players' on field performance on the back. Holding the players "in the palm of your hand", or on display in protective card albums typically gives fans a wide range of emotions; from the warm fuzzy feeling we have for our personal heroes to the sheer disdain we have for an enemy player, or one of marginal ability who seems to be in every new pack we buy, taunting us with their useless duplication.

Without a doubt, we're hooked on collecting these little "cardboard gods"; and the author of this book, Josh Wilker, has paid a personal tribute to many of the cards he collected as a kid from the mid '70s - early '80s, with a wonderful narrative that is well-written, at times humorous, and at times quite poignant, as he relives the memories - some good, some not so good - that each card evokes.

From Bake McBride to Thurman Munson; from Jim Rice to Rickey Henderson; each story is told with refreshing candor and eloquence as Wilker rehashes various events from his rather difficult and mundane childhood; always, it's the memories which are attached directly to his personal collection. For every memory the author shares, the reader will more than likely relive their own personal anecdotes that are directly related to that particular card. As an avid collector for many years, I have most of the cards the author shares, including the 1980 Rickey Henderson rookie card, which by chance, seemed to be the most common card that came in the batch of "random" cards I purchased. I'm sure the folks at Topps had no idea this guy was going to be the best leadoff hitter in baseball history when they doled them out to buyers in time for the '80 season.

Whether you're a big baseball fan or simply interested in American pop culture, you'll more than likely find this "All-American Tale" a fascinating, compelling, and highly enlightening journey through Josh Wilker's childhood. It's quite a story and one that I highly recommend reading for yourself.

Cardboard Gods: An All-American Tale Told Through Baseball Cards Overview

Cardboard Gods is the memoir of Josh Wilker, a brilliant writer who has marked the stages of his life through the baseball cards he collected as a child. It also captures the experience of growing up obsessed with baseball cards and explores what it means to be a fan of the game. Along the way, as we get to know Josh, his family, and his friends, we also get Josh’s classic observations about the central artifacts from his life: the baseball cards themselves. Josh writes about an imagined correspondence with his favorite player, Carl Yastrzemski; he uses the magical bubble-blowing powers of journeyman Kurt Bevacqua to shed light on the weakening of the powerful childhood bond with his older brother; he considers the doomed utopian back-to-the-land dreams of his hippie parents against the backdrop of inimitable 1970s baseball figures such as “Designated Pinch Runner” Herb Washington and Mark “The Bird” Fidrych. Cardboard Gods is more than just the story of a man who can’t let go of his past, it’s proof that — to paraphrase Jim Bouton — as children we grow up holding baseball cards but in the end we realize that it’s really the other way around.

Only fair and not worth buying. - Allan S. Reid - Chicopee, MA
The book actually has very little to do with baseball cards. It's just a poorly written collection of bizarre and often crude anecdotes about the pathetic life of this loser of an author. Don't buy this for your kids! A couple of graphic descriptions of coaches sexually molesting little boys is hardly appropriate reading outside of an adult bookstore. Horrible waste of money and time.

Pure Poetic Brilliance - J. Kattef -
In Cardboard Gods, Josh Wilkers demonstrates a mastery of English prose. Quite simply, the cover blurb says it all: ""Josh Wilkers writes as beautifully about baseball and life as anyone ever has."

If you ever collected baseball cards, you will love this book. If you didn't and you love good writing, you will still love this book.

well done Mr. Wilkers - a masterpiece.

Tremendous Book - D. I. Kleban - Texas
What a wonderful book this is. As a child growing up in the Northeast in the 70's, Wilker has perfectly captured what it meant to come of age in that era. The book has not only prompted me to break out my baseball card collection, but has also caused me to pull out my memries of youth for the first time in years. I also highly recommend readers check out the blow ([...]) which is also excellent. Bravo Mr. Wilker.

World of Cars Review

Indeed, this one's great for "Cars" fans of any age. I only regret that we don't yet have more such volumes illustrating some backstory for all of the characters! There's a great intro from John Lasseter as well.

I love all five stories here, but in order, my favorites are:

"Showstopper" (Flo's, & therefore slightly Ramone's); "Ciao, America!" (Luigi's & Guido's); "And Now a Word from Our Sponsors" (Lightning's & Mac's); Hoodwinked (Mater's); and "Banged Up" (Doc Hudson's.) Each entertaining, funny, and beautifully illustrated tale provides a slice of the characters' earlier lives. The pictures on each page are terrific--big, colorful, and detailed.

I personally found Flo's and Luigi/Guido's stories to be the most creative and interesting, but again, they're all very good. (I love that Lightning's features Rusty and Dusty of Rust-eaze--those two clowns clearly based on the hosts of the fantastic National Public Radio program Car Talk, 'Click & Clack the Tappet Brothers!')

So if you read or buy just a couple of "Cars" books, this is one to go for, along with "Meet the Cars" (which is likewise an enlightening wealth of facts, that tells you a bit about each of 100 characters.) With this, you'll actually learn new things about each of the included characters, and definitely enjoy both the well-written text and the pictures. They're loaded with the delightful and engaging cleverness you've probably come to adore and expect from Pixar.

Great book! - R. Hillman -
My 3-year-old, who is a huge Disney Cars fanatic, LOVED this book! It has some really great and cute back stories of the characters, and the pictures are great. :o) Definitely was a good buy, and I would buy it again!

Best of the Cars Books - SKKING - St. Louis, MO United States
This book is the best of the Cars books out there, hands down. With great artwork and imaginative backstories, it helps to really expand the world of Cars, not just re-hash the movie (as many of the books do). My son (3 1/2) loves finding out how the various cars got to Radiator Springs, and it is great to see him loving the drawings on the page and not just on a flickering screen. The stories themselves are filled with the humor that you find in the movie and the characters ring true -- for Cars fans this book will not disappoint.

Perfect for Cars fans of all ages - Aaron Silverman - Boynton Beach, FL, United States
My son is into anything Cars, so we're always on the lookout for Cars-themed stuff. There are dozens of books available, but nearly all of them are simply variations on the story from the movie. Many of them even share the same artwork. This book presents several completely new stories from the pasts of most of the main characters. They're well-written and substantial, and the illustrations are excellent. It's a good book to read to pre-readers and will also appeal to older children who can read it on their own.

The CD included with some editions of this book (it might be exclusive to a certain brick & mortar retailer) doesn't really add much -- it's simply a recording of an actor reading the book, with no music or effects.

Peterson Field Guide to Animal Tracks: Third Edition Review

The original Peterson's Field Guide to Animal Tracks by Olaus Murie has been an inspiration to generations of trackers, naturalists, and wildlife enthusiasts. It was the first in-depth guide of its kind, and in addition to numerous illustrations of tracks and animal sign, Murie added colorful stories of his own experiences in the great outdoors. The book transcended mere field guide status into the ranks of the classics of natural history.

In the most recent revision of this classic, Mark Elbroch has done an exceptionally tasteful job of updating the guide. He worked to enhance the work of Murie, but keep the essence of the classic work. In particular, Elbroch re-arranged the animal species into phylogenetic order (the order by which animals are related through the course of evolution) allowing for the many advances within the scientific community since the original book was published, and added many color photographs to enhance the illustrations of Murie. As Elbroch notes, the book is still the one Murie wrote; Elbroch simply acted as a caretaker to bring this great book to generations more.

I would recommend this book highly to anyone with an interest in animals or natural history.

Check Out 100 Classic Hikes Colorado for $14.00

100 Classic Hikes Colorado Review

I had the older version of this book and absolutely loved it. I've planned many weekend trips and vacations based on the hikes in this book. I've never disagreed with the authur about a hike being one of the top 100 in Colorado.
The new version has elevation profiles which are very nice. However, I don't care for the new maps. The old book had maps which were very easy to see. The new edition has topo maps which I think are too crowded and busy to be able to make anything out. I can't tell if there are streams next to the trails, which is very important to me as I hike with a dog and it's usually the first thing I look at.
There are several new hikes: Bear Peak (Boulder), Lake Isabel (W. of Denver), Mount Falcon (Denver), Devil Head (Sedalia). Red Rock Canyon (Colo. Sprgs.), North Cheyenne Canyon (Colo. Spgs.), French Pass (Jefferson/Fairplay), Tater Head Loop (Crawford), Mosca Pass (Alamosa), No Name Lake (Antonito), Rabbit Ears Mesa (Grand Junction) and Sarvis Creek (Steamboat).

Golf's Sacred Journey: Seven Days at the Links of Utopia Review

I'm not a big golfer, but I enjoyed this book immensely.

I was hooked from page one by the writing and shared in the protagonist's journey -- not only to the small town of Utopia, but also in his journey for awareness. He begins the story as a broken man, defeated by his own doing and completely lacking of any functional internal compass. By the end he's whole, focused and in charge of his own destiny. It was a great read and I loved every minute of it!

The story is based on thousands of athletes the author has counseled, and the great mentors and teachers from whom he has learned, told through the lives of two characters---a rancher with a passion for teaching truth and a young golf professional at the end of his rope. What's the deal with the Face-On putter? - Gary Messerli - Sioux Falls, SD USA
This book was a disappointment. We meet the unnamed narrator as he is having a bad hole in a tournament. The next thing you know he is driving off into oblivion. There was no real build-up to the character. Why was he so down on golf all of a sudden? Had he had bad tournaments before? Was something missing in his personal life? What was his personal life? We aren't told. That made it very hard to sympathize with him.
There was a really odd thing in this book, too. While the book purported to be about learning lessons that not only apply to golf but also to life, the author entered some bizarre line about a new type of putter he called a "Face-On Putter". In the end, the narrator was supposed to introduce it to the world. What has that to do with the main idea of the book? Is this a putter the author invented and is trying to introduce to the golfing world? What the...?

Check Out The Greatest Game Ever Played: A True Story for $5.55

The Greatest Game Ever Played: A True Story Review

This book is a very good compliment to the movie 'The Greatest Game Ever Played'. Mr. Frost did his homework. He included background information, history on all of the players, and follow through. I actually wondered if the book was going to turn out the way the movie did. I'm not into golf but still enjoyed it, if you are into golf you'll appreciate the technicalities (some of which I skipped through). The movie was a little different than what really happened so it was interesting to know the real story.

Well done Mr. Frost, thank you for taking the time to follow up on what happened to all of the players in the game after the 1913 Open, and for the history on Harry Vardon and Ted Ray.

The Greatest Game Ever Played: A True Story Overview

This narrative chronicles the birth of the modern game of golf through the story of Harry Vardon and Francis Ouimet. These men, in pursuit of their passion for a sport that had captivated them since childhood, lifted themselves out of their lives of common poverty and broke down rigid social barriers, transforming the game of golf into one of the most widely played sports in the world today. Vardon and Ouimet were two men from different generations and vastly different corners of the world whose lives, unbeknown to them at the time, bore remarkable similarities, setting them on parallel paths that led to their epic battle at Brookline in the 1913 US Open. This collision resulted in the "big bang" that gave rise to the sport of golf as we know it. In this book, Mark Frost tells their story, including along the way over a dozen of the game's seminal figures, within the dramatic framework offered by the 1913 tournament where they finally met, which became one of the most thrilling sports events in history.

One of the Best Sports Books I've Read - Randy Kadish - New York, NY
This is one of the best sports books I've ever read. Mr. Frost paints a vivid picture of the world of professional golf at the start of the 20th Century, and how a single tournament put golf on the map in America.

But even more important, Mr. Frost he brings compelling, likeable characters to life - characters who had to overcome adversity - so to me this book is also for people who are not golf fans.

This is an inspiring story, almost a fairy tale that comes true.

Fine book with a notable exception - kenneth shouler -
As an overview of the philosophy of sport from Egypt and Ancient Greece to the present time, this is a fine volume. But it is breathtaking that in a review of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich the author saw fit to recall "Notable" performances in track and field events, gymnastics, swimming and more and yet managed to leave out the most notable and historic contest of all: the gold medal basketball game between Russia and the United States. This was the United States' first "loss," since basketball's inclusion in 1936, though they were swindled out of their gold after officials put time back on the clock on three consecutive occasions.

In a spirit of solidarity and righteous indignation the American team refused to accept their silver medals.

How can this episode--which is arguably the greatest instance of official bias
in sports history--not be recognized in an objective history of this sort?

AMC White Mountain Guide, 28th: Hiking trails in the White Mountain National Forest (Appalachian Mountain Club White Mountain Guide) Review

As others have said, this is the indispensable guide to "the Whites." Who needs a Fifty Hikes book? The AMC Guide has thousands of hikes, and sussing them out is almost as good as being on the trail. My own version, with orange covers, was the Seventeenth Edition of 1963> it was my faithful companion when I hiked to the summits of the Four Thousand Footers and other bits of backcountry foolishness, including a hundred-mile traverse of the White Mountains in July 1975, a story I told in The Country Northward: A Hiker's Journal, On the Trail in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, recently updated in paperback and as a Kindle e-book. Blue skies! -- Dan Ford

Be Iron Fit, 2nd: Time-Efficient Training Secrets for Ultimate Fitness Review

If you are planning on racing an Ironman in the coming year, I would go so far as to say you have to buy this book. It will probably be the best investment you will make helping you accomplish your athletic goals and allowing you to have more fun along the way. I've raced 2 Ironmans, a Half Ironman, and 5 marathons over the past 3 years and I still go back and re-read certain chapters of BeIronFit. I even take it with me to my races, it's that good.

First of all, Don Fink is one of the most experienced and accomplished coaches in triathlon today. His approach, advice, and training plans have worked for countless athletes at all levels (from beginner to elite). I wouldn't follow a training philosophy or plan if it were not proven. My time and goals are too important to me.

BeIronFit is an exceptional read and resource. Very well written. What's remarkable about the book is that there is something there for everyone. If your goal is to finish your first Ironman or to qualify for Kona, I believe you will benefit from reading this book. Triathlon can be a complicated sport and the book goes into appropriate detail but not overly so. I think the reason I continue to go back to the book is that the philosophy, tips and advice to training and racing are sound - almost fundamental truths. Don not only explains exactly what you need to do day by day, week by week (laid out in your training plan), he clearly explains his coaching philosophy so that you understand exactly why you are doing certain workouts during the different phases of training.

What's interesting about Don and perhaps one of the reasons why he has been such a successful coach is his background. He became an elite triathlete while managing a successful and demanding career on Wall Street. On one level, his story is inspirational. I think many of us dream (maybe secretly) of becoming elite athletes while working full time. More importantly though, he understands what it's like to have a family, manage a career and train for ironman - all at the same time. As a result, this book is packed with practical advice and tips for the rest of us. In addition, throughout the book, Don features several athletes he has worked with where they share their own experiences and advice. Very helpful.

Getting to the starting line is more than half the battle. Reading this book will help you get there healthy, physically prepared, and mentally confident. As a result, you will have more fun and race faster, of that I'm confident.

Pragmatic, high-performance Ironman training from a seasoned athlete - C. Curran -
Don provides clear, concise training approaches based on proven experiences of his own. I have used Don's advice from his first book to help me complete three Lake Placid IM triathlons (all under 11 hrs). This book takes that advice to the next level...and I am confident it will take me to my next level.

training made easy - AG -
This book is even better than the first. I feel Don is talking directly to me and understands me. His experience will improve my learning curve and I have total confidence in his approach. Regardless of your goals in triathlon this book will help you reach them in a totally organized well thought out plan. He takes the guess work out of the equation, all you have to do is the work. Good luck and see you out there. Steve L.

From One of Don's Coached Athletes - Michael Lemberg - WNY, NJ
I purchased the first edition of Be IronFit and was impressed. Don laid out a clear vision of what's required for Ironman success, provided examples of those who had done it (apart from himself), and expanded on the tools needed for the job. To a newbie, the book was worth its weight in gold.

The second edition offers all of the above plus inspiring athlete profiles, nutrition guidelines, fantastic core strength routines, and longer sample plans. You couldn't ask for more!

With the fundamentals of the book in hand, the plans are what set you up for success. As one of his coached athletes, please believe me when I say the book's plans are the real deal!

Don offers sage advice on a topic that has needlessly become overly complicated.

A must-read for those interested in approaching their athletic potential.

Buy This Book, Do What Don Fink Says, Become An Ironman - S. Boyles -
This is one of my favorite books, all-time. Here's why: The Be Ironfit program provided me with the time efficient training plans and advice to become an Ironman in 2008, and again in 2009 (and beyond).

Don Fink (an Ironman age group legend), draws upon his vast racing and coaching experience to inspire and prepare any triathlete to achieve the Ironman dream. Just as important, before I finished reading Be Ironfit (the first time) I felt belief replace my doubts about whether I could ever train for and race 140.6 miles.

This 2nd edition is even more comprehensive (I've read and studied both editions). It updates the latest core and strength training techniques with Don's tried and true time-efficient heart rate based training and swim/bike/run techniques advice. It is extremely well-written and organized and provides invaluable information and tips on: time management, nutrition, pre-race, race day, post race, race selection, mental strategies, and more. You can choose to follow the competitive program, the intermediate program, or the 'just finish' strategy.

With Don's guidance, and this revised edition in hand, I am training for my third Ironman race this year. With consistent adherence to Don's training plans and advice, I continue to get faster and faster. In fact, my P.R.'s continue to drop significantly at all distances (from sprint to olympic to 70.3 to 140.6) -- at the age of 45!

Buy the book, read the book, do what Don Fink says, become an Ironman! It really is that simple.
