SAS Survival Handbook, Revised Edition: For Any Climate, in Any Situation Review

I found this book far more enjoyable to read than Mors Kochanski's book. Measurements are in dual units, chapters on trapping, fur/hide treatment, edible plants, hunting, fishing, etc were just far more complete than the Mors book. The plant section included color images which I feel make identification far easier. The Mors book was horribly edited, disjunct and unmemorable. The Mors book does seem to cover more extended living topics like basket weaving.

Some of the content feels rehashed from other sources, like from a boy scout handbook. Coverage of rope making feels to me like it was ripped right out of the Mors book. The map usage section is just abysmal. There is not one aspect of actual orienteering that is covered. Fire is such a critical part of survival, I would like to have seen some more depth to the coverage of the topic. These are the reasons I knock off a star.

But in closing, it does deliver so much useful information at an extremely reasonable price, I would definitely recommend it as a book to read and to keep as a reference in whatever preparedness kit you may have.

Im no survival expert - Luis Felipe DueƱas -
I got interested in survival when I took some lessons about the subject. I wanted a book that taught about survival in a easy yet a detailed way, so i found this book in Amazon and bought it right away, at the beginning i had some doubts about my purchase, but when i got my hands on it i felt that i obtained more than i payed for. as i said before im just interested in the topic, but for being my first survival book i think is very complete and detailed, the illustrations are very good, the writing simple and direct, considering I'm not a native English speaker it was really easy to understand. i haven't finished yet, i just enjoy reading it. i have no complaints regarding the book, i would recommend it to anyone. maybe the only downside is that is aimed for first world countries, i mean for assembling a survival kit & pouch many utensils are not available however i can use some imagination and improvise. very good book.

In need of an editor - K. Kalish - Grand Rapids, MI
The content of this book gets five stars for being neatly organized and helpful, however this edition is in serious need of a revision.

My first indicator was the introduction to the book. It mentions the Berlin Wall coming down in 1999. An oversight like this is inexcusable and sent up warning flags right away as to how many eyes had actually read the book from cover to cover (as I'm in the process of doing).

The text is written in a British style (SAS, of course), which will take some getting used to for US readers but isn't a big deal. That said, I've still had to re-read several passages due to poorly assembled sentences which lack proper punctuation. Has this guy ever heard of a comma? They can be a lifesaver to a reader. Again, not to be a grammar snob, but if you want to use this as a quick reference in a time of need, the last thing you want to tackle is a confusing run-on sentence. Those are my major gripes.

Excellent Information - R. Young - Charleston, SC
As an Eagle Scout, I decided to purchase this book as a condensed means to information when I go out camping. Though I have done more then my fair share of camping and backpacking, its extremely difficult to keep this information memorized unless you are backpacking very regularly and using this information. Its got excellent information and detailed diagrams of everything from building a shelter to typical plants that are edible or not. If you are an avid outdoor backpacker, I highly recommend this book.

Must For Any Survivalist's Collection - Serious Ed - USA
Interesting read. Good information.

*Plant drawings should have been photographs of the real thing, would have been more useful.
